Witchcraft is one of the most beautiful natural practices you could ever stumble into. Whether your interest in it stems from a love of nature, being born with a heightened intuition, or a simple interest in crystals and natural healing, witchcraft is a beautiful practice that can be done by anyone with an open mind and a willingness to learn. However, if you’re just starting out, without a doubt, witchcraft can be pretty intimidating. With so many different practices, belief systems, and versatile categories to learn, it can easily leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused about how to even begin with it. But don’t worry, that’s where we come in. And today, we’re going to talk all about witchcraft for beginners.
With that said, in this article, we’re going to share with you our top 10 personal beginner witch tips to help you transition into your own witchcraft journey a little more smoothly. So whether you’re just starting out or are already along your journey and in need of a little guidance, we hope this article will help you to find a better understanding of the path of the witch and all the magick within you and around you. Let’s get started.
Tips for Beginner Witches
1. You don’t need to know everything right off the bat
To start, our first tip for baby witches is that you don’t need to know everything right off the bat. Witchcraft is quite a versatile practice with many different branches to explore that will take many years to understand. In fact, even the most experienced witches that have been doing this for decades will tell you that they too are still learning. Therefore, don’t worry about trying to learn everything all at once in order to get started. Instead, just try to find one thing to focus on at a time to create a steady pace for yourself where you don’t feel overwhelmed or confused. This will help to make your transition into witchcraft easier and allow you to retain information learned more efficiently. More than anything, take your time, young witch.
2. Try to start small
The next tip for baby witches is to start small. While it can be tempting to want to delve into more high-energy practices such as scrying or shadow work, starting small is a great first step to take to help you get the hang of the basics without feeling overwhelmed. This could include taking some time to study the key terms and properties of herbs and crystals or reading up on the many moon phases and their correspondences. Above all else, it’s always best to try to get some of the basics down first before jumping into anything difficult.
3. Don’t be afraid to try new things
Our next witchy tip for baby witches is to not be afraid to try new things. A lot of times, many witches at the start of their journey can feel discouraged from branching out from the “common practices” in witchcraft due to the lack of exposure around them. However, researching and trying something new, even if it may not be commonly done by others, could end up being a beautiful experience for you personally, but you will never know unless you put yourself out there and give it a shot.
As with anything, trial and error along this journey will be your best friend, so don’t be afraid to venture into some unknown territory if it is what feels right for you. And of course, always be safe with it.
4. Understand that you don’t need any items in order to be a witch
Next, another witch tip for beginners is that you don’t need any items in order to practice or ‘be a witch.’ Without a doubt, if you search the hashtag #witch on any social platform, there are bound to be thousands of pictures of extravagant altar setups, extensive crystal collections, and a large and versatile selection of energetically enhanced jewelry. And while all these accessories and supplies can be quite beautiful to look at and can certainly support your practice with their energy and their intention, the truth is, you only need you and your intuition to practice witchcraft.
Therefore, don’t feel like you need to spend a bunch of money on spiritual tools in order to be considered a witch. You already are one, and any other tools that you get will only help to support that further, but it will not create the power that you already hold within you. Magic doesn’t reside within any item - it resides within you, and learning to express that naturally will be one of the most important aspects of your craft.
5. Understand that everyone’s practice and journey is unique
Next, another key tip for baby witches is to understand that everyone’s craft is different, and no two witches will do things the same. For example, some witches may follow a certain belief system while others won’t. Some witches may also believe in deities or gods, and others will not, and that’s ok.
More than anything, witchcraft is a very personal practice, so experiences and beliefs will always be different. Therefore, don’t ever feel like you are doing anything wrong or incorrectly just because it isn’t considered to be mainstream. As long as your practices feel right to you, there is no wrong way to be a witch, and you should always trust that knowledge to guide you through it all.
6. No, you don’t have to be a Wiccan to practice witchcraft
Next, to go along with the above tip, a huge misconception with witchcraft these days is that you have to follow a certain religion, such as Wicca, in order to practice as a witch, and this is absolutely not true.
While Wicca is based around witchcraft and magick in its own way, you can still practice as a witch if you follow any other type of religion as well, and even if you do not have a religion at all. Truly, as we’ve stated above, witchcraft is extremely unique to each individual, and there is no rule about who can partake in it in regards to their religion or background. Therefore, please don’t ever feel discouraged about following your call to witchcraft simply because you do not follow a specific religion. Witchcraft is and will always be for anyone and everyone open to learning it, period.
7. Prioritize documenting your experiences
Next, another tip for baby witches is to make it a priority to document your witchcraft journey. Since everyone’s path is different and each individual witch will find different things that work for them, jotting down some notes along your journey is an excellent idea to keep track of your unique personal experiences. This can help you to not only remember the specific healing properties of certain herbs or crystals, but also help you to keep track of spells and rituals you come up with, what works, and what doesn’t for you, and so forth.
Above all else, documenting your findings can be a great way to reflect on your experiences along your journey as you continue to grow and expand.
8. Learn to trust your intuition
Next, another baby witch tip I wanted to share is to remember to always trust your intuition along your path. Throughout your witchcraft journey, you’ll likely feel many ‘tugs’ in your intuition from what is right or wrong for you, what is good or bad, what to learn more about, what you may not be ready for, and so forth, and these should always be trusted. And the best part is that you can easily work to develop your intuition further through simple everyday tasks, such as spending more time in nature, practicing meditation, working with natural elements, or doing intention setting to get more attuned with it.
More than anything, trusting your intuition more can help to align you deeper with your practice as well as your destiny and is definitely worth putting the work into to develop.
9. Remember: Your craft should always add to your life
Next, another key tip to remember as a baby witch is that your craft should always add to your life above all else. Therefore, if you find yourself feeling like your craft may be taking away from your life in any way or may be causing mental or emotional discomfort to you, it’s a good idea to take a step back and reevaluate how you can practice in a way that brings something good into your life instead. More than anything, witchcraft should never be a negative experience and should never feel like a chore. But if it’s starting to feel like it is, take some time away from it to ground yourself and figure out if this truly feels like the most authentic path for you or if you are being pulled towards something else.
10. Understand that magick takes time
And lastly, another important tip for baby witches to remember is that everything takes time in witchcraft. From seeing results with your spells and rituals to learning to trust your intuition and work with energy more, it takes time to find a way to practice that truly works for you and connects with you authentically, and that’s ok.

Thank you for the tips on becoming witchy! I have been following this path for maybe 6-7 years now, so maybe I’m not a new witch any longer, but I certainly am still learning the basics. I find it a very comforting craft to practice, and I’m thankful for all the help.

I loved the information however I wish that people would stop using the term baby witch. No one is baby. They may be a novice, a beginner on this journey but baby sounds insultingly condescending

The article….perfect! My grand daughter (16) is passionate about crystals, researching each one and discovering how significant they’re in life.
Her personal style and beliefs completely opposite from friends.
This article tells her exactly my very spoken words. She carries a keen sense of wisdom and knowledge of a old witch, she’s
been gifted.
This article perfect timing and I thank you.

I really hate the term baby witch. I haven’t been a “baby” for a long time. I am a novice, inexperienced, new but not a damn baby!

Fan of the dilly-dally? Our relationship game is on the starting block for this Total Solar Eclipse in Aries. It’s up to you to surrender to your true love nature to heal a sense of identity OR keep the mask on until the next eclipse season. Let the Nesters unite! You’re not alone, as our collective psyche as a species is going to have this axis eclipsed. Think war & peace, sport & rest, Mars & Venus, Aries & Libra.
What’s under review for this total solar eclipse? The potential balance of our true cardinal fire nature (Aries) coupled with our diplomatic and conditioned peace-at-all-costs (Libra) is up for an overhaul review (oh, is that all…). Why is it more pronounced for us this time around? Because the North Node of the Moon s currently transiting Aries and the collective has Pluto’s ingress to Aquarius supporting evolution at this time: freedom to be. Can’t put it any simpler!January 21, 2024

I started my witchcraft practice over four years ago and am still on a journey of discovery each and every day. I think your article hits all the important aspects while still maintaining the essential message that the craft is and always will be personal and unique to each practitioner. I absolutely agree to start small and always use your intuition to guide you. That is the heart of real magiik.
