How to Set up an Altar for Summer

As we move through June, we soar into new beginnings as the hot nights of summer take over and guide us to a season of fun, laughter, and adventure. Often referred to as the season of hope, summer is a rich time of year full of optimism and new beginnings. It is a time when we channel more energy towards our personal endeavors, spend time with those closest to us, and make plenty of new unforgettable memories. Not to mention, it is also a time of personal empowerment as we embrace more of the fiery light within ourselves and allow it to shine with the guidance of the sun and the Solstice.

Because of this, doing what we can to welcome in and honor this energy is essential to truly make the most of it and can help to enhance our spells and rituals at this time. And what better way to do that than by setting up a summer altar? So in this blog, we wanted to share a few of our favorite ways to decorate your altar to welcome in and celebrate the summer season, as well as a few product recommendations that align with the energy of this time of the year as well. So, without further ado, here’s our personal guide to setting up a summer altar to make the most of this beautiful season.

1. Altar Decor Ideas

Starting off, it’s always best to tackle your altar decor first. This is because our altar is often our place of prayer and is where many of us focus our energy on honoring and celebrating the summer energy. In the summer, many people love to create a natural altar outside in the woods to honor the summer abundance, while others choose to place their altar in the window to honor the sun. Wherever you choose to put it, the first step to setting up your altar space for summer is to start by asking yourself what summer looks like to you. Is summer full of flowers and warm colors? Is summer rich in earth green hues and woodland decor? What does it look and feel like to you personally?

For us, the summer makes us think of colorful flowers, beautiful green scapes, earthy smells, and all things outdoorsy. For that reason, we love to set our altar with woodsy decor, much of which you can collect in your own backyard. However, there are also plenty of other corresponding items you can find in the stores or make yourself. With that said, a few natural decor ideas that you might consider putting on your altar include:

  • Branches and greenery
  • Flowers such as sunflower, lavender, roses, peonies, or daisies
  • Items in colors of green, yellow, red, orange, white, and blue
  • Symbols of the sun or sun deities
  • A sun catcher
  • Faux fruit and basket
  • Images or symbols of birds and butterflies
  • Shells, sand, and other beach decors
  • Fire and flame symbols

However, if you’re looking for some altar decor pieces that aren’t all woodsy, we have a few other recommendations that might interest you and can help to add a different element to your altar.

1. Carved Soapstone Mortar and Pestle

Our first recommendation is the carved soapstone mortar and pestle. Designed to make grinding and crushing herbs easier, a mortar and pestle has long been associated with the healing arts and has been used by spiritual practitioners for centuries. With a triple moon design and soapstone material, this mortar and pestle is said to carry with it energies of calmness and positivity. It is also said to help those seeking to expand their mind or go a new route in their life, making this an excellent piece for the expansive summer.

Magical and multi-use, this is the perfect piece to use to add a little extra magic to your kitchen witchery.

2. Soleil and Crystals Prism Suncatcher

Our second pick for altar decor items is the Soleil Crystals Prism Suncatcher. Designed with high-quality crystals and a beautiful symbol of the sun in gold colors, suncatchers have long been associated with altar decor of the summer season and are a perfect way to invite more light-hearted and warm energy to your altar. Not to mention, this can also be placed in a window in your home if you prefer to invite a beautiful array of rainbow colors into your room.

Inspiring, calming, and the perfect way to honor the sun, you can’t go wrong with this beautiful prism suncatcher.

3. Live By the Sun Surrounding Mist

Lastly, another product that is a must for us on our summer altar is the Live by the Sun Surrounding Mist. Vegan and all-natural, this spray is designed to help bring positive energy to you and your space. With key natural ingredients such as rose water for balance, lemon for a boosted mood, bergamot for anxiety, orange for stress reduction, and grapefruit for happiness, this is a great spray to use for working at your altar, when preparing to meditate, as a body mist, or just as a nice room spray if you’re in need of a little summer boost.

Truly, the sky is the limit when it comes to decorating your altar for the change of the season. But more than anything, it’s important to include any decor that speaks summer to you, and that feels connected with the season for you, even if it isn’t on our list, as this will help your altar to better align with your specific energy and intentions and ultimately help to make your craft that much stronger.

2. Seasonal Candles

Next, alongside the rich and fiery colors of summer and the beautiful natural decor around you, candles are another key piece to include on your altar for any season. Candles are one of the best pieces to have on an altar not only for their connection to any time of the year but because they can be used for just about anything. For that reason, you’ll want to look for candles in colors of red, orange, yellow, white, green, or any other vibrant colors that match the beautiful summer season for you.

For scents, lavender, rose, sage, frankincense, pine, or cedar are a few excellent choices and are often believed to correspond with this time of the year. Of course, since summer is also a lush time when all the flowers are blooming, and the trees are in their prime, any floral scents relating to these would also be an excellent choice.

With that said, our personal recommendation for a summer candle is the Abundance Meditation Candle. With a natural, earthy blend of chamomile, oats, and honeysuckle, this candle has been crafted to hold the divine essence of Venus, the Sun, and earth to offer you a unique array of healing benefits all in one candle. Topped with quartz crystal, this candle holds key energies of abundance, luck, and happiness and is the perfect candle to work with this summer.

3. Summertime Crystals

Next, it wouldn’t be a seasonal altar setup if we didn’t add in a couple of options for crystals. Crystals are just one of those things that, no matter what you use them for, are bound to amplify the intent of your practice further. Therefore, swapping out altar crystals each season for ones that are more aligned to the energy of this time is a great way to work more closely with the season and welcome the abundant changes of its energy. With that said, since summer/Litha correspond with the energies of happiness, confidence, and vitality, you may want to keep an eye out for crystals that align with these energies, such as:

  • Carnelian: For ambition, confidence, and empowerment
  • Tiger’s Eye: For confidence, protection, and luck
  • Amber: Purification, positivity, and release
  • Citrine: Luck, happiness, and clarity
  • Sunstone: Enthusiasm, positive energy, and self-worth

And more. Of course, choosing crystals is a very personal practice, so remember to always use your intuition to guide you towards the ones that feel right for you, even if it may not have made our list.

4. Seasonal Incense

Next, incense is another important part of decorating your altar and can help to capture the beautiful essence of the season in aromatic scents and invite it into your home. So, since the summertime energy is rich in earthy floral blooms, the fresh aroma of new tree growth on the summer breeze, and earthy scents from the ground below, you’ll want to look for scents that can mimic these calming and rejuvenating smells to welcome the season into your space. With that said, a few ideas for corresponding incense for the summer season might include:

  • Myrrh
  • Frankincense
  • Mint
  • Sage
  • Sandalwood
  • Orange
  • Rose
  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Pine
  • Cedar
  • Fir tree

However, our personal favorite incense for summer is the Satya Spiritual Healing Incense. Non-toxic and environmentally friendly, this incense carries a warm, uplifting citrus scent that is sure to soothe nerves and help to give you a more positive mindset. Best used during meditation or yoga, this is the perfect incense to use if you’re looking to calm your mind, find your center, and all-around create a place of serenity within you and within your space.

5. Protection Items

Next, protection items are always a must on your altar, no matter what season it is, so it’s always a good idea to change them up from time to time to help keep the energy strong. Therefore, a few ideas for protection items that you might want to consider adding to your altar for summer include:

  • Deity statues
  • Herbs such as rosemary, bay, or mugwort
  • Crystals such as tigers eye, black tourmaline, or hematite
  • Symbols of protection from your faith

Whatever you choose to use, protection items are a must on every altar at all times to keep your practice safe and sacred and your energy protected.

6. Summer Beauty Products

Next, for us, another big part of enhancing your altar for the season is to make sure you’re switching out old beauty products with new products of the season. However simple this may seem, this can help you welcome in and absorb the healing properties of the seasonal magic better and ensure your skin is getting the proper care it deserves through the seasonal changes. From sprays to lotions, here are some of our top favorite summer beauty products that you may want to consider adding to your altar.
